What is Vanilla Powder?
Vanilla Powder is a premium organic product sourced from the pods of vanilla orchids (vanilla planifolia). These pods are cultivated, activated, dehydrated and finally ground into a delicious vanilla powder.
Where can I use vanilla powder?
Vanilla powder can be used for cooking, baking, in smoothies, anywhere you would normally use traditional liquid vanilla extract or vanilla pastes.
Do I use less or more vanilla powder than vanilla liquid or paste?
Because it is concentrated, you will typically use less vanilla powder than traditional vanilla extracts or pastes. For every teaspoon of extract or paste you would normally use in a recipe, only a ½ teaspoon of vanilla powder is required.
Where is vanilla powder sourced from?
Our Vanilla powder is sourced in Uganda from organic Grade A Planifolia bean pods.
How do I store vanilla powder?
Store in an airtight container, in a cool dry place with low humidity, away from direct sunlight.
Can I use vanilla powder in baking or when cooking dishes that require high temperatures or will it lose its potency?
Absolutely. Vanilla powder is heat stable, so is not affected by high temperatures during cooking. The concentrated powder also retains its rich flavour during cooking.
How is Vanilla Powder made?
Our vanilla pods are cultivated organically, without the use of chemicals, fertilisers or other nasties. Once harvested, they are cured, which involves immersion in hot water to prevent them from fermenting. Next, they go through a sunning and sweating process to activate enzymes and develop the rich vanilla flavour and colour. Once activated, the pods are packed away for several months to allow the flavour to deepen. Finally, the pods are dehydrated and finely ground into vanilla powder. The entire process can take up to 12 months.
