Do you have any baking products made from perennial grains?
At the time of writing, we do not have any baking products made from perennial grains.
What is a perennial grain?
A perennial grain is a type of grain-producing plant that lives for more than two years and continues to produce edible seeds or grains year after year, without the need for replanting. This contrasts with annual grains (most traditional grains), which complete their life cycle in one growing season and must be replanted each year.
Why the interest in perennial grains?
The development of perennial grains is of interest as it has the potential to reduce environmental impacts associated with annual grain farming such soil erosion, soil health, and reducing the need for frequent cultivation and replanting. Perennial grains may also contribute to increased biodiversity in agricultural ecosystems.
What research is behind perennial grains?
Research* is ongoing, but the development and adoption of commercially viable perennial grain crops is still in the early stages. Some experimental perennial wheat and rice crops have already been developed, however widespread adoption and large-scale cultivation is currently limited.
